The Rotterdam Film Festival has sold itself in the 1990s as the European festival for world cinema. Eschewing the emphasis on trade and the big American premiers dominating Berlin and Cannes, Rotterdam's strong suit has always been adventurous programming. Apart from the usual array of films from around the globe, major themes this year included the millennium and digital technology.
