Marjorie Jackson-Nelson first caught the public’s attention when, as an untried 17 year old, she beat the world number one sprinter. The “Lithgow Flash”, as Marjorie would come to be known, went on to win two Olympic and seven Commonwealth Games gold medals and break ten world records during her athletics career. In 1952 at Helsinki, she became the first Australian woman to win Olympic gold for track and field. Her dedication to sport has continued through roles with the Commonwealth and Olympic Games movements, and following the death of her husband in 1977, she has been a tireless fundraiser for leukemia research. In 2001, she was appointed Governor of South Australia.
