Heywire is a unique and exciting ABC Radio project that aims to represent and engage young people in rural and regional Australia, provide them with a chance to share their own stories and connect them to the broader community through radio, television, online and in a yearly youth issues forum in Canberra.

Heywire presents the potential to provide a positive opportunity for young people's voices to be heard, and to listen to the voices of others for their own benefit and that of their local communities, now and for the future, and create a safe and positive environment for the exploration of ideas for community action.

Heywire concentrates on two key levels of community benefit: it raises significant issues for young people from regional and rural Australia for wider debate, and it encourages the positive and personal development of young community leaders.

It's a unique ABC project because it's solely designed for young people from regional, rural and remote Australia – or, as Heywire describes it: 'for those who live outside of Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth ...'

This resource guide is designed to assist high school teachers and youth workers to bring media learning and digital literacy into the classroom. The Heywire concept can work in any class, subject or discipline – whether it be Social Sciences, Health, English or Media Studies, learning about the media and digital story creation can be an important and valuable teaching tool.
