For children, family life has changed dramatically in recent years. Parents are older. Children are fewer. Often both parents work. One third of Australian marriages end in divorce. Songs of Innocence features thirteen children from nine families, talking candidly about the often painful business of growing up in diverse family structures. It shows the complications that children face as they sort things out on their path to adulthood, as well as the importance of the parents' role and of communication in families.

Songs of Innocence is a thought-provoking one-hour documentary that offers a child's-eye view of family life in today's society. Thirteen children express their feelings about growing up in diverse family situations. The video and associated curriculum guide booklet provide resources for teachers and students at senior secondary and tertiary level, as well as professional and community groups.

The documentary Songs of Innocence can be used to teach about the documentary form and film language, and as a resource for teaching and learning about multiculturalism, relationships and values.

This resource would be most suitable for use in Years 5–9 in the curriculum areas of Arts (Media), English and Psychology.
