Strength from Within: Facing the Big Issues in Here I Am

The poignant Here I Am (Beck Cole, 2011) belongs to an emerging body of work that boldly tackles the ongoing challenges facing Indigenous Australia, and like many of these films, proposes that solutions need to start from within. Its tale of a mother separated from her child against her will contains a contemporary echo of the trauma experienced by the Stolen Generations and their families, but as Chris Muir discovers, this is not the only important issue it confronts.
