The 22nd Margaret Mead Film & Video Festival, the world's oldest non-fiction festival, was held in New York City from 6–14 November 1998. The festival's overriding objective is the appreciation, understanding and sharing of cultural difference. The 1998 program included four highlights: a retrospective of international filmmaker Raoul Peck, a section on Haiti, films by Australia's Indigenous filmmakers as showcased in the 'From Sand to Celluloid' program, and new documentaries from Taiwan. This was the first US retrospective of Raoul Peck's films, which have enjoyed very limited distribution in America.
